door,
her gaze barely bothered
to espy each
way to escape,
her own breaths betrayed her,
adamant to remain at leisure—
scornful of becoming hitched
at the base of her throat,
her knuckles, kempt and rosy
as if they had pledged to not
turn into the palest tinge
of white
neither had her palms
been scathed for the nails
forsworn to dig into her skin
at the source of fright,
now as peril peeked
from the other side
of the halfway opened
door,
she only found herself
questioning why she was
no longer trembling.
